Accreditation is one way we assure the community that we are doing our best to achieve exceptional care and service.
The accreditation process involves the ongoing review of our performance against national standards across a range of areas.
We regularly review and improve our processes and services to ensure that we continue to comply with these standards. External surveyors assess our performance every 2 years.
The National Standards and Accreditation
All Australian health services are required to be assessed under a national accreditation program launched by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.
The program requires that health care providers meet 10 minimum standards. Those standards are designed to maximise patient safety and quality and include:
- Governance for safety and quality in health service organisations
- Partnering with consumers
- Preventing and controlling healthcare-associated infections
- Medication safety
- Patient identification and procedure matching
- Clinical handover
- Blood and blood products
- Preventing and managing pressure injuries
- Recognising and responding to clinical deterioration in acute healthcare
- Preventing falls and harm from falls.
Australian Council on healthcare standards
To further ensure that we are delivering high quality services, we have elected to be assessed against another 5 standards established by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards. These additional standards cover:
- Service delivery
- Provision of care
- Workforce planning and management
- Information management
- Corporate systems and safety
At our most recent accreditation survey, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne was awarded Met with Merit ratings for a range of actions across the 15 EQuIP National Standards. A significant proportion of these related to systems, information and processes relating to how we inform and partner with consumers in addition to our management of clinical and non-clinical risks.
